Fortnight Finds Vol. II

Welcome to Volume II of Fortnight Finds. This week, we have a collection that runs from a legendary Seattle DJ to atmospheric rap out of St. Louis to Croatian funk jams. Plus, an album of lo-fi Christmas remixes, because it is December after all.

Damien Rose - Rounds of Release

Rounds of Release is a rap album heavy on both atmosphere and wordplay. It is filled with cleverly chopped and flipped samples, which create a familiar low-fi fog, over which Rose balances a tumble of intricate verses. This is also Rose’s third project since July of this year, so you can reliably expect more of the same soon from the St. Louis rapper.

Vitamin D - Flips Vol. 2

If you only listen to one instrumental hip-hop album this week, let this be it. Vitamin D is Seattle hip-hop veteran, and on Flips Vol. 2 he uses every year of that DJing experience to create a masterful exercise in crate-digging, full of excavated sounds both familiar and obscure.

Oslo Twins - Demos vol. 2

One of the fun things about finding a demo tape is hearing bands trying out new sounds and ideas. Oslo Twins are in the process of carving out a specifically dreamy, floaty indie pop, and Demos vol. 2 finds them experimenting with instrumentation -- including a droning church organ on “Basilica.”

Rav - I’m On To Me

Rav specializes in a kind of anxiety-fueled introspective rap, and as the title suggests I’m on To Me is full of self-doubt and second guesses. But even though there’s a common thematic thread throughout these songs, Rav is pretty adventurous in the sounds, which range from classic soul flips, to Rex Orange County-stye indie beats to a Beastie Boys inspired track.

haar - flow on EP

Jessie Howard is a singer and songwriter based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in England, and as haar she records deeply warm indie tunes that drape you in sound like a warm blanket. Put this one on while you’re stuck inside on a cool day this winter.

If you’re looking for funk-rock jams out of Croatia’s capital city, look no further than this new album from Svemirko, which is 9 tracks of earworm riffs and tremendously enjoyable bass grooves.

Sev - Christmas Medley

The cynic in me sees this as an SEO-generated attempt to generate attention during the Christmas season by combining the internet’s love of holiday music with the internet’s love of lo-fi hip-hop beats to study and relax to. However, in the spirit of the season, I have to admit that I really enjoy these remixes, which feel just as cozy and warm as Christmas classics are meant to feel.
