Quick Thoughts: With his latest release, B4DACHECK, Jay Montana wastes no time on an introduction – instead, he puts one of his best songs to date, Covid-21, as the first track on the project. If you’re like me and are just discovering Montana’s work, that song alone will give you a great impression. Representing Mobile, Alabama, Montana’s style is certainly influenced by a handful of well-known southern rappers, but you can tell he’s starting to discover his own sound.
As a project, B4DACHECK feels like Montana’s most cohesive work yet. You can tell he’s got a preference for guitar-based beats, but the production on the project never feels boring, as Montana always seems to find new melodies and cadences to keep you listening closely. Montana has released several projects since 2019, and at this point, it is only a matter of time before one of his songs catches fire and goes mainstream. We’re excited to see what the rest of the year holds for the up and coming rapper.
