Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, singer songwriter David Kushner uses his lovely vocals and captivating storytelling ability to grab hold of the listener and keep their attention. Kushner started his music career by writing songs in his bedroom and has parlayed that into a following of 1.8 million TikTok followers. Kushner initially released a clip of his song, Miserable Man, on TikTok, which gained massive popularity leading to the song's much anticipated release. Kushner’s fans begged for the full song, and since its release less than a month ago, the song now boasts over 12 million streams on Spotify alone.
The vocals present themselves in a way that is reminiscent of Lewis Capaldi and James Arthur. The deep melodies paired with a beautiful acoustic guitar instantly hook the listener, commanding the tone throughout. Kushner drives the song in a way that invites feelings of conflicting emotions to sit side by side.
Kushner brings us on a journey with him. He tells a story of young love, discovery of the self, growth and, eventually, acceptance. The song revolves around a small-town couple searching for “a place to feel like home,” running away to eventually build their dream home and start a family. In the chorus, he returns to this idea of “misery.” Yet, the concept of the “miserable man” isn’t used in the usual sense. He seems to be using the idea of misery as a placeholder for the idea of living life the way he wants as opposed to staying in the small town where they “can’t be what they want.” Essentially he’s using misery as a way to say happiness.
What is most exciting about his debut is that Kushner has more to give. With millions of fans eager for his next single, Mr. Forgettable, all that’s left for us to do is keep an eye on this up and coming artist. I, for one, can’t wait to see what he does next. Stream on Spotify:
